Common Heating Questions

When should heating systems be serviced?

Heating systems should be serviced annually to ensure they are running efficiently and safely. The best time to schedule maintenance is before the start of the heating season, usually in the fall, so you can be sure your furnace, boiler or heat pump is ready for the colder months.

How often should you replace your heating system?

How often you should replace your heating system depends on various factors such as the type of system, its age, maintenance history and overall condition. Generally, furnaces last 10-15 years and boilers have a life span of 15 to 30 years. Heat pumps may last 10 to 15 years.

However, when to replace your furnace or other heat system has more to do with how well it runs rather than strictly its age. Frequent repairs, increased energy bills and reduced heating performance are all indications your heating system may be losing efficiency or failing and could be a candidate for replacement.

Why is my heater not heating?

When your heater won't heat, try these three easy troubleshooting tips:

Check the thermostat: Make sure the thermostat is set to heat mode and the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature. Replace the batteries if necessary and verify that the thermostat is working correctly.

Inspect the air filters: Dirty or clogged air filters can restrict airflow, reducing the efficiency of your heating system. Check the air filters and replace them if they appear dirty or clogged to improve airflow and heating performance.

Check the circuit breaker: If your heater won't turn on, check the circuit breaker or fuse box to verify that the circuit supplying power to the heater hasn't tripped. Reset the circuit breaker if necessary and check for any signs of electrical issues.

If these three strategies don’t solve your heating issue, reach out to Akshar HVAC at 609-456-5808 for heating system service, repair or to sign up for regular heater maintenance.
